History of the Cape Cod Men's SummerSpiel

In March 1984 while driving back from The Gordon Medal competition in Montreal, Dave Dewees and Bob Ottaviano got to talking about the summer mixed bonspiel. By the time they got to Cape Cod they had roughed out a schedule for a mens summer spiel to be held the weekend after the mixed spiel. The time between the two would give club members an opportunity to enjoy some fun summer curling.

Bob brought the idea to the Board of directors at the March meeting. After much discussion and the promise that the female members of the Club would not be called upon for more work, the Board gave its approval. With Bob as chairman a small committee was formed to get everything ready for our guests. Since there was little time for invitations to go out, Bill Hill was asked to call friends at Canadian Curling Clubs and Bob, Dave, and others called the Grand National Clubs to solicit teams. It was also decided to limit the number of teams to 12. Response was excellent and we had our 12 team bonspiel ready to go by July.

It was decided that they would have a raw bar for the Thursday welcoming party. Bob's wife, Rita, and his father went to Sandy Neck and dug 2 bushels of littleneck clams and club members opened them for the hungry curlers. Friday night they had a steak fry at the club. After the finals on Sunday a pig roast was held at Dave & Anne Dewees' farm. Both the Friday and Sunday meals were put on by Hy Peters and family.

The pigs tail and hooves were presented to the winning rink from Norfolk; Jody Law, George Dyer, Chris Ocain and Rick Law.

All the visiting teams were enthused about the bonspiel and asked if it would be an annual event. We told them it would be and it has been. Each year has brought more innovations and teams and the event is looked forward to by serious curlers and fun curlers alike.
