The 2024 Mac Jones Sticks v Sliders Bonspiel was held this past weekend on November 15-16.
This event dates back to 2008 when Leonard (Mac) Jones proposed an annual bonspiel that
would pit stick curlers against slide curlers at the Cape Cod Curling Club. After Mac passed
away in 2011, the Board of Directors unanimously voted to rename the Sticks vs. Sliders
Bonspiel the “Mac Jones Sticks Vs. Sliders Bonspiel”, and it has become a favorite event for
club members.
Six Slider teams competed against Six sticker teams for ‘bragging rights’, and this year the
Slider Teams have a lot to brag about, coming away with a decisive victory, scoring 132 points
compared to the Stickers 90 points. All 48 curlers, regardless of the side they were on, had a
great time on and off the ice. Another highlight was the Fantasy Curling competition.
Congratulations to Jamie Quinn, this year's Fantasy Curling winner. His Fantasy Team topped
a record field of over 100 entries, taking the top spot by only 2 points.
As always, there is a great deal of gratitude to go around to club members who volunteered for
the event. Peter Mili and Joanna Schaffer chaired the event, supported by many members of
the Thursday 4pm League, and Bill Gallagher was our ‘club bookie’ for Fantasy Curling.
Rosanne Mili served as the meal lead for the event, supported by Peter and Joanna in the menu
planning, shopping, and cooking, with the 4pm League volunteers assisting with serving and
cleaning up. Friday’s dinner of homemade ‘Mac’ n Cheese, chicken nuggets, salad and sides,
and Saturday’s lunch of Pulled Pork, Cole Slaw, and sides seemed to more than satisfy the
appetites of all curlers. In addition, special thanks to Phil Bruce for his work doing 3 scrapes for
the event, and Scott Fernades and his volunteer crew for ice prep between draws.
