As our second half leagues are about to begin, and as many of us are preparing for in-house and away bonspiels, we are launching a new training and discussion on our Blog:
KNOW THE RULES — Winter 2025
From time to time we will set out a curling scenario, many drawn from actual curling games of our members, pose a question to our members, and provide an answer based on applicable Rule(s).
For the 2024-2025 curling season, Cape Cod Curling Club follows the World Curling The Rules of Curling (2024),
As adopted and followed by USA Curling for the 2024-25 curling season, and
As modified by Cape Cod Curling Club Rules and Regulations, dated October 3, 2024.
These rules can be found:
- On the CCCC website, capecodcurling.org. Log in as a Member and go to Curling, Rules and Regulations, where you can find links to the Club’s Curling Rules and the World Curling Rules.
- World Curling Rules can also be found on the World Curling website, worldcurling.org, under Resources, The Rules of Curling (2024).
- A red binder on the Club’s front desk contains printed copies of the World Curling, The Rules of Curling (2024), and a printed copy of our local CCCC rules.
In Closing
The underlying tenet of anything and everything that happens on curling ice is The Spirit of Curling, found as follows in the prologue to World Curling, The Rules of Curling (2024):
“Curling is a game of skill and of tradition. A shot well executed is a delight to see and it is also a fine thing to observe the time- honoured traditions of curling being applied in the true spirit of the game. Curlers play to win, but never to humble their opponents. A true curler never attempts to distract opponents, nor to prevent them from playing their best, and would prefer to lose rather than to win unfairly. Curlers never knowingly break a rule of the game, nor disrespect any of its traditions. Should they become aware that this has been done inadvertently, they will be the first to divulge the breach. While the main object of the game of curling is to determine the relative skill of the players, the spirit of curling demands good sportsmanship, kindly feeling and honorable conduct. This spirit should influence both the interpretation and the application of the rules of the game and also the conduct of all participants on and off the ice”
The Spirit of Curling is said by some to have originated in the early 16th Century in Scotland. Since that time, rules have been added to the game to define guidelines for actions such as delivering stones
and sweeping, and in general to provide an environment for consistent competition.
There are many versions of curling rules, beyond those that our Club follows. The most contiguous to our Club are the Curling Canada Rules of Curling, curling.ca, which are similar but different in several ways to the World Curling Rules.
Indeed, Cape Cod Curling Club, until recently, followed the USCA Rules of Curling, which were also similar but different from the World Curling Rules. However, in September, 2023, and beyond, USA Curling adopted and follows World Curling,The Rules of Curling, and therefore, so does CCCC.
That’s all for now. Looking forward to being back on the Blog soon with scenarios and questions to test your knowledge of the rules! Good Curling!
